Chicken Plant Bad for Health of Millsboro Community, Report Says

Allen Harim website

The proposed chicken processing plant in Millsboro has run into a critical environmental report.

It says the Allen Harim Foods poultry plant would be bad for the local community’s health and would pollute  the nearby air and soil.

The study by the University of Maryland said Allen Harim should move to a more remote location with fewer existing sources of pollution.

The Wilmington News reports that “The Rapid Health Impact Assessment” also noted the plant was part of a brownfield site with such contaminants as arsenic and hydrogen sulfide.

The paper says that Allen Harim wanted the brownfield designation because it would have allowed the company to receive $225-thousand reimbursement for cleaning up the site.

The News Journal reports that a representative from Allen Harim could not be reached for comment over the weekend.
