Hogan Visits Controversial Frederick County Sheriff

official website

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - Maryland Gov.-elect Larry Hogan is celebrating the re-election of a county sheriff known for his tough approach to undocumented immigration and drug trafficking.

Hogan is scheduled to speak Friday at the swearing-in ceremony in Frederick for Frederick County sheriff and fellow Republican Chuck Jenkins.

Jenkins has embraced federal programs allowing local police to enforce immigration laws.

Last summer, he visited the U.S. - Mexico border on a tour sponsored by an immigration reform organization that the Southern Poverty Law Center considers a hate group.

Hogan said during the campaign he wasn't familiar with all of Jenkins' views on immigration, but Hogan recognized Jenkins' effort to combat heroin-related crime.

Hogan also said during the campaign that fighting heroin-related crime would be among his priorities as governor.
