DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware Supreme Court Justice Carolyn Berger, the only woman to serve on Delaware's highest court, says she is retiring.
Berger, who also is the only woman to serve as a judge in Delaware's Court of Chancery, sent a two-sentence letter to Gov. Jack Markell on Friday saying she was retiring after more than 30 years on the bench.
Berger's retirement marks the third resignation from the five-member Supreme Court in less than year.
Markell announced Friday what he was nominating Karen Valihura, a corporate law attorney, to succeed Justice Jack Jacobs, who is leaving the court later this month.
Jacobs and Berger both announced their retirements after former Chancellor Leo Strine Jr. was sworn in in February to replace Myron Steele as chief justice. Steele announced his retirement in September.
