DOVER, Del. (AP) - Two officials in Dover are sparring with the city manager over a plan to impose the largest tax hike in years while also bonuses and pay raises to city officials.
The Wilmington News Journalreports Councilman William Hare and Councilwoman Beverly Williams argued with City Manager Scott Koenig during a budget hearing Monday night over the proposed tax increase. The questioning became so heated that the council ended its meeting early.
The proposed 21-percent increase for property taxes would raise about $2.3 million to fill a gap in the city's $39 million proposed budget. Homeowners would pay between $36 and $165 more per year.
But Hare called the city's proposal to pay $1,250 bonuses and pay raises for 11 department heads a slap in the face.
