Distracted Driving Citations Skyrocket in Maryland

family photo

Since texting while driving became a primary offense in Maryland in October… nearly 68-hundred e-tickets have been issued for distracted driving.

That’s up from just 5-thousand in 2013.

During April’s “U Text U Drive U Pay” campaign more than 1-thousand citations have been issued by Maryland State Troopers.

And Wicomico County led with 229.

If you use your phone while driving you could face up to $160 for multiple offenses.

The new law was named Jake’s Law after 5-year old Jake Owen who was killed when he was hit by a driver who was texting.

The penalties for causing serious injury or death while driving and texting carries a sentence of a year in jail and a $5-thousand fine.
