The Laurel School District has begun arbitration to hammer out a workout a contract with its teachers.
It has been four years since the Laurel Education Association which represents the teachers has had a contract with the district.
Yesterday’s arbitration session comes in the face of financial struggles by the district.
WBOC reports that teachers are not asking for a salary increase but want better working conditions.
The Association is seeking things like comp time control of where they work and the choice not to be transferred.
Meanwhile, district attorney David Williams says school officials want to reclaim some of the management rights that have been given away over the years to effectively oversee the district.
