DOVER, Del. (AP) - The Department of Corrections has closed a troubled boot camp program at the Sussex Correctional Institution.
The department said Wednesday that the Sussex Boot Camp was closed this week. Its operations were suspended in November after a drill instructor was charged with having sex with three inmates.
All boot camp employees were reassigned within Sussex Correctional Institution. Thirty-four inmates were completing the program when it was suspended.
The Boot Camp building is currently being used to house short-term, low-risk inmates. Its future use has not been decided, officials say.
Officials say the program, which was started in 1997, did not meet the treatment needs of inmates. The camp tried to achieve discipline and structure by using physical activity, manual labor, drill, and strict rules to limit idleness and govern inmates.
