Delaware Panel Studies Driver's License for Undocumented Immigrants

Don Rush

A legislative task force in Delaware is looking at giving undocumented immigrants the right to drive.

The cards would only be used for recognition within the car and only inside the state of Delaware.

They would also require immigrants to take a written and vision exams before getting the license.

Claudia Pena Porretti, executive director of La Esperanza in Georgetown, is one of the 27 members of the panel.

She told WBOC that this would benefit all drivers – especially for identifying those who have been in an accident.

But Georgetown Police Chief William Topping, also a member of the task force, said he was concerned about ensuring proof of identification before someone is given one of these cards.

The panel is expected to present its findings by late October.
