WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware State Police have arrested a high school student after a loaded handgun was allegedly found in his backpack in a classroom.

It happened about 1:55 p.m. Tuesday at John Dickinson High School in Wilmington. Police say school officials received a tip that a 17-year-old student had a gun in a backpack.

A trooper assigned to the school and staff found the student inside a classroom, took his backpack and took the student into a hallway.

Officers say a loaded Kel-Tec 9mm Luger semi-automatic handgun was found in the backpack.

Police say the student ran out of the school and into a nearby wooded area. He was found and arrested without incident.

The youth, who troopers say is a convicted felon, has been charged with weapons offenses.
