Sussex County Airport Needs to Attract Corporate Jet Traffic

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) - A consultant says attracting more corporate jets to the Sussex County Airport would help cut the airport's operating deficit.

The Wilmington News Journalreports that consultant Randal Wiedemann does not recommend trying to attract a commercial airline to the Georgetown airfield.

Wiedemann also suggested renaming the airport Delaware Coastal Airport or something similar to capitalize on its location near beach resorts.

The airport rents hangars to aviation hobbyists, houses an aircraft repair company and has a sit-down restaurant, but expenses regularly exceed revenues, with a $300,000 deficit in 2013.

Wiedemann gave the county council a list of ways to cut expenses and boost revenue at its airport, saying it could cut the shortfall to about $159,000 in 10 years.
