The Somerset County Commissioners are considering a pension plan to cover longtime volunteer fire and ambulance companies.

Those fire company member in good standing as of July 1 of 2015 would be grandfathered into the plan with the years of earned service.

the Salisbury Daily Times reports that volunteers who only serve in the ambulance companies would be eligible after 20 years because they answer three times the number of calls and are required to complete more training.

The aim of the new plan is to attract and retain volunteers.

George Nelson, captain of the  Somerset County Ambulance & Rescue Squad said there are only three members who have served long enough to qualify for the proposed retirement plan.

Nelson is a member of the citizens committee which came up with the plan, which was first broached by the fire and ambulance companies in 2010.
