Bus and Paratransit Fares Expected to Rise in Delaware

official photo

The Delaware Department of Transportation wants to double most bus and paratransit fares over the next two years.

The aim is to expand bus routes and implement a new model of paratransit.

The Wilmington News Journalreports that Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt says that the current system is not sustainable and is inefficient.

He says the cost of the current program has risen from $15 million in the year 2000 to $50 million today – or a 233 percent increase.

So, next week the Delaware Transit Corporation will begin a series of public hearings on redesigning the system with written comments accepted through November 15.

The paper reports that the state has not significantly adjusted the bus or paratransit fares since 1989.
