MOUNT AIRY, Md. (AP) - The town of Mount Airy has started holding business owners responsible for the proper disposal of fats, oil and grease.

The Frederick News-Post reports that the ordinance was passed during a public meeting earlier this month. It was written by members of Mount Airy's water and sewer commission in response to an incident of sewer damage that cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair.

The town had not previously monitored how restaurants and other businesses disposed of fats, oil and grease.

The ordinance requires business owners to show proof of proper disposal. Those who don't provide proof could be fined $1,000 or face six months in jail.
