Lore’ Chambers has been nominated for the city administrator’s job along with another candidate interim city administrator Tom Stevenson after she was fired by Mayor Jim Ireton as assistant city administrator.
Ireton told the Salisbury Daily Times that he had promised to recommend her for the job before the City Hall confrontation that led to her dismissal.
He said, ”I promised and I’m a man of my word.”
Since Ireton dismissed her from her position in July the city has been fighting her application to get unemployment benefits citing misconduct as the reason for her firing.
The attorney for Chambers said that on Monday the city appeals a hearing examiner’s decision that sided with Chambers.
Council member Shanie Shields said it was “strange” that Ireton would go through the steps of denying her unemployment benefit.
The council is charged with the final hiring decision.
Finally, Mary Ashanti, president the Wicomico County branch of the NAACP, told the Salisbury Daily Times that she supports Chambers becoming city administrator but declined to comment further on the Mayor’s actions.
