Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) - More than 2,000 volunteers are expected for an annual cleanup of Delaware's coastline.

Saturday's cleanup will take place at nearly 50 locations statewide. They include Fox Point State Park in New Castle County, Kitts Hummock Beach in Kent County and Rehoboth Beach and Cape Henlopen State Park in Sussex County.

The cleanup takes place from 9 a.m. to noon.

Assateague

Meanwhile, Assateague Coastal Trust is seeking volunteers to join them for an Island Coastal Cleanup this Saturday at the Assateague Island National Seashore and State Park.

Kathy Phillips, spokesperson for the organization, says the island cleanup is necessary to protect the wildlife from the dangers of trash.

"It's important the we keep the coastline as clean of marine debris as possible just because there's a lot habitat up there in the dunes." She adds, that plastic can be extreme dangerous for sea turtles.

"Plastic bags that are floating out in the water and may get caught up in high tide and washed back out into the ocean sea life such as a turtle which will misinterpret that as a jelly fish." She said they "can end up killing themselves as a result of tryng to ingest a plastic bag."

A new addition to the cleanup this year is “Trash Flotilla” that includes canoes, kayaks, or stand up paddleboard to clean up the Assateague bayside.

The effort is part of the worldwide cleanup hosted by the Ocean Conservancy.

It begins at 9a.m. and last for two hours.
