Don Rush

There’s been a 20 percent decline in commercial air passenger traffic at the Salisbury-Ocean City: Wicomico Regional Airport by the end of August.

That’s according to stats compiled by Salisbury-Wicomico Economic Development.

The U.S. Department of Transportation figures through may found that nearly 50-thosuand passengers came through the airport.

At this time last year the number came in at 62-thousand.

Airport Manager Bob Bryant told the Salisbury Daily Times that the decline in number is clearly the effect of Allegiant Airlines departure less than a year after debuting its service of low-cost flights between Salisbury and Orlando, Florida.

There was no explanation as to why the airline dropped its service.

US Airways Express has been the exclusive carrier ever since.

It provides a handful of flights a day from Salisbury to Philadelphia and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Bryant told the paper that its passenger traffic is down by about 5 percent this year in Salisbury.
