Security Chief Departs After Cumberland Prison Stabbing

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says a second official is leaving his job after a western Maryland correctional officer was injured by an inmate.

The agency said Monday that the chief of security at North Branch Correctional Institution near Cumberland has been removed and reassigned. The agency says the unidentified security chief was removed because Officer Herbert Hilliard wasn't notified of the threat.

The department says it has found deficiencies in the senior-level staff response to the inmate's threat. But the agency says the failure to notify Hilliard wasn't deliberate.

On Friday, the agency announced that Jon Galley, executive director of the region that includes North Branch, will retire Nov. 1. Officials say his retirement isn't related to the assault on Hilliard.
