"Romantic Superstore" Sign Draws Fire In Salisbury

creative commons wikimedia

There’s a new sign out along Route 13 in Salisbury.

It reads “Red Light District, Romantic Superstore.”

And its display windows feature mannequins dressed in lingerie.

It’s part of the ongoing battle between the owner of the lingerie store and Mayor Jim Ireton just what kind of sign will be allowed – and the nature of the store itself.

Ireton says the store owner did not get the needed permission from the city for the sign.

Under a 2008 law a store is defined as adult if more than 20 percent of its floor space, sales and product inventory consists of adult merchandise.

If the store on the 500 block of North Salisbury Boulevard does not meet that requirement it cannot have a sign.

Ireton says if it did, then it would be within 1-thousand feet of a residence and a house of worship.
