Pedestrian Struck by Police Cruiser in Delaware

Don Rush

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware State Police are investigating after a man was hit by a trooper's cruiser.

The man was hit early Thursday as he tried to cross Kirkwood Highway, and police say alcohol and drugs were a factor on the part of the man, who was not in a crosswalk.

When the man crossed into the path of the trooper's Ford Crown Victoria, police say the trooper tried to swerve to avoid him, but was unable to do so. The man was hit and thrown to the roadway.

The man was taken to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center in critical condition. The trooper was not injured.

Police say they are still trying to determine the man's identity.
