Governor Martin O’Malley raised nearly a half a million dollars in federal campaign funds last year and is spreading some it around in early presidential primary states.
That’s from a pair of campaign finance reports released yesterday.
The Baltimore Sun reports that the vast majority was raised from Maryland donor.
But the paper reports there are signs of a national fundraising apparatus as the Maryland Democrat considers a bit for the White House.
The Federal Election Commission says he raised $164-thousand in funds that can be used to support other candidates for federal office.
Another stream of cash in non-federal money comes to $315-thousand that can be spent on gubernatorial and legislative candidates across the country.
The Washington Post reports the "non-federal" account allows O'Malley to accept unlimited donations, but that a voluntary $10,000 limit has been put in place. Eleven donors gave $10,000.
The governor, who is considering a presidential run, gave money to two candidates in the early primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire. He gave $2,500 to Iowa Rep. Bruce Braley, who is running for U.S. Senate. He also gave $2,500 to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, of New Hampshire.
