NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Christiana Care Hospital is partnering with a cord blood bank to give new mothers a safe, effective way to make donations.
The hospital announced the partnership with CORD:USE, a cord blood banking organization, on Wednesday. CORD:USE President Ed Guindi says umbilical cord blood can be used to treat more than 70 diseases, including leukemia and lymphoma.
NBA Hall of Famer Julius "Dr. J" Erving is a spokesman for the organization and signed basketballs for women who donated their cord blood. He says his passion for the cause stems from his brother's death of lupus at age 16.
