Annual Clam Bake to Draw Gubernatorial Hopefuls

Crisfield City Events Website

CRISFIELD, Md. (AP) - The 37th annual J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake is set for a steamy afternoon at Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield.

The outdoor all-you-can-eat affair is scheduled for Wednesday. It has become a major meet and greet for Maryland officials over the years.

This year, the inevitably hot event is happening as some Maryland politicians are getting an extra early start on campaigning for 2014.

The event is named after Maryland's 54th governor, who was from the small Eastern Shore town of Crisfield. Tawes was governor from 1959 until 1967.

Another Gubernatorial Candidate

Meanwhile, another Democrat has jumped into the race for Governor of Maryland next year.

Montgomery County Delegate Heather Mizeur will make it official today.

She sent an email out to supporters last night telling them that she plans to begin her campaign at today’s Clam Bake in Crisfield.

The Montgomery County Democrat says she will then attend service projects throughout the state this weekend adding that her campaign will be more than just a series of rallies.

Mizeur has been a member of the House of Delegates for the last seven years representing the Silver Spring and Takoma Park areas.

For example, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor, chose his running mate last month a year before the primary. Republican David Craig chose his running mate on Tuesday.
