MD GOP Criticizes Hike in Gas Tax

Don Rush

With Maryland’s gas tax of roughly 3.5 cents a gallon going into effect the state’s Republican leaders criticized the new revenue sources yesterday.

The first news conference held by the GOP took place near the Bay Bridge where the toll also went up from $4 to $6 less than two years after it went up from $2.50.

State Senator Edward Reilly of Anne Arundel complained that Maryland motorists will be saddled with high driving costs local businesses will be impacted by higher delivery costs.

Democratic supporters say the increases are long overdue since the gas tax had not gone up since 1992.

And, many business groups including the Greater Baltimore committee came out in support of the increases.

Meanwhile, Virginia also approved a major transportation revenue package this year.
