New Chicken Litter Composting Site Approved in Sussex County

Don Rush

The Sussex County Council has given its approval to a new way to deal with composting chicken litter.

A the plan by Perdue AgriRecycle would place a breathable fabric over a mix of sawdust and droppings swept out of chicken on its property so that it could quickly decompose.

The cover will allow the air and some humidity to escape while keeping the rain off allowing the company to fine-tune the temperature and moisture for quick decomposition.

The nutrient-rich soil could then be sold to landscaper or farmers.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports small scale chicken composting is not a new idea, but the subsidiary of Perdue Farms is hoping to accelerate the process.

No major poultry company in the Mid-Atlantic region has tried it.

The county council voted unanimously to allow the company to construct a facility on its property in western Sussex.
