Evolution Gets Notice in Proposed Textbook for Wicomico County Schools

Robert Ashby Collection

The Wicomico County’s Board of Education is seeking public input on a reference in a proposed textbook on evolution.

The book is called “Ways of the World – A Brief global History with Sources.”

Board President Ron Willey said he had a problem with a statement on Page 3 which he said, “It is a matter of fact verses theory.”

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Willey says, “I love the way the author handled the content without taking a position.”

But he added one statement give him trouble. “Evolution is the issue.”

There is only one reference to evolution in the opening chapter the curriculum does not discuss the theory.

Meanwhile, school board member Carolyn Elmore said she supported the use of the text book because the theory of evolution was not part of the curriculum.

Lori Bock, supervisor of social studies, the textbook would be part of the shift AP studies from European History to World History.
