A new Maryland task force that will review the best practices for handling offenses committed by juveniles is holding its first meeting.
The Task Force on Juvenile Court Jurisdiction is meeting Wednesday in Baltimore at the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention. The Maryland General Assembly created the task force this year. It is also responsible for studying current laws relating to the jurisdiction of the juvenile court.
The task force will be making recommendations on whether or not to eliminate existing offenses that automatically result in adult charges. It will also recommend ways to reduce the number of youth in adult detention centers and prisons, among other things. The final report and recommendations are due Dec. 1.
