Poor Safety Record for Truck Company Cited in Train Derailment

ROSEDALE, Md. (AP) - The National Transportation Safety Board is citing the poor safety record of a trash hauler whose truck was involved in the explosive derailment of a freight train near Baltimore.

Board member Robert Sumwalt said at a news conference Thursday that Alban Waste LLC had an above-average number of violations resulting in trucks being ordered off the road.

Company owner John J. Alban Jr. was driving the truck that was hit by a CSX train Tuesday in east suburban Rosedale. He remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Sumwalt says investigators have obtained Alban's blood samples for routine drug and alcohol testing. He says they plan to interview him when his condition improves.

Sumwalt says the incident caused damage of more than $500,000 to the train and $120,000 to the tracks.
