Bullet Proof Vests Needed in Wake of Courthouse Shooting

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Two police officers who were shot at the New Castle County Courthouse earlier this year are joining U.S. Sen. Chris Coons in calling for Congress to reauthorize a bill to provide bulletproof vests to law enforcement officials.

Corporal Steve Rinehart and Sergeant Michael Manley both Capitol Police officers, were to join Coons on Friday outside the courthouse in Wilmington.

Rinehart and Manely both were wearing armor obtained through the federal Bulletproof Vest Partnership when they were shot in February.

Coons helped reintroduce the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act earlier this month, but says it is being blocked in Congress.

The act reauthorizes a competitive grant program that provides funding to state and local law enforcement agencies to help buy bullet- and stab-resistant body armor.
