EDGEWATER, Md. (AP) - Fire officials say eight people have been hospitalized after an explosion and fire on a boat in the South River near Edgewater, Maryland.

It happened about noon Monday at the Oak Grove Marina. Anne Arundel County Fire Department Division Chief Keith Swindle says the 32-foot pleasure boat had just refueled when the engine stalled. He said while the owner was trying to restart the engine, an explosion and flash fire occurred.

Natural Resources Police say three children, ages 9 and 13, were taken to the burn unit at Johns Hopkins Bayview in Baltimore. Five other children and adults were taken to area hospitals. They suffered from burns. Authorities said their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

Natural Resources Police are investigating the explosion.
