BALTIMORE (AP) - A report by legislative auditors says the Maryland Tax Court failed more than 40 percent of the time to resolve homeowners' appeals of property-tax assessments within 90 days of filing, as state law requires.
The report released Thursday by the Office of Legislative Audits says the Tax Court missed the deadline by a month or more in 293 cases, or 41 percent of the 720 appeals. Those appeals were filed or heard between July 1, 2010 and Feb. 20, 2013.
Tax Court Chief Judge Walter C. Martz II tells The Daily Record that 41 percent is a problem. But he said this was an improvement from the 62 percent failure rate found by a prior audit.
