DOVER, Del. (AP) - A bill aimed at strengthening education and preparation standards for schoolteachers in Delaware is headed to Gov. Jack Markell for his signature.
The state House on Thursday approved the legislation, which strengthens licensure requirements for prospective teachers.
The bill includes entry requirements for entering teacher preparation programs at colleges and universities, and requires content exams and performance assessments before licensure. The legislation, which previously passed the Senate, also requires teacher preparation programs to track and report data on their effectiveness.
House members voted overwhelmingly for the bill after rejecting an amendment by Wilmington Democrat Charles Potter that would have removed minimum grade point average requirements for applicants for teacher preparation programs.
