U.S. Route 40/Pulaski Highway in the town of Bear will be closed for two weeks in August.
On August 12th work will begin on the railroad crossing between Delaware Route 72 and East Scotland Drive and end just before the first day of school on August 26th as part of repairs on 34 highway crossings by the Norfolk Southern Corporation rail company.
In most cases the roadways at the crossings will be shut down around the clock for four to five days.
Sean Golt, the railroad coordinator for the Delaware Department of Transportation, told the Wilmington News Journal that he believed the rail company has been “dragging their feet” in keep these crossings maintained.
Scott Muir with the railroad’s government relations division told the paper that despite rebuilding 13 road crossing last year DelDOT and Norfolk Southern have a tight schedule in 2013 to address priority crossings with the roughest riding surfaces.
Delaware is negotiating with Norfolk Southern and other railroads to get a more specific agreement on when repairs are made and how they are paid for.
