Minimum Hike Tabled In Delaware House Committe

Don Rush

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A Senate proposal to raise Delaware's minimum wage by a dollar over the next two years has been tabled by a House committee.

The committee voted 7-3 Wednesday to table the measure, which passed the Senate on 12-9 party-line vote, with only one Democrat voting against it.

The proposal would raise the current hourly wage from $7.25 to $7.75 on Jan. 1, 2014, and to $8.25 on Jan. 1, 2015.

Supporters of the measure have said the higher wage will stimulate the economy and help low-wage families make ends meet.

Opponents argue that it will lead to higher prices that will negatively affect low-wage earners and result in employers hiring fewer workers.
