Appoquinimink School Referendum Today

Don Rush

Voters in the Appoquinimink School District are going to the polls today in a referendum that could decide the fate of many students and teachers.

The district is asking voters for an increase of 15 cents for every $100 of assessed property value.

This would mean that the average property owners would pay around $11 more per month or $132 more a year.

That is half of what voters rejected in a referendum in February.

Superintendent Mathew Burroughs says with a tight budget there will be little left to be cut that will not affect students.

If the referendum fails, Burroughs told WDEL, that class size for grades 1 through 3 could increase 25 percent to 30 percent.

In addition, he said, extracurricular activities would be eliminated.
