New Scholarship Program for Homless Students in Delaware

Don Rush

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington University is focusing a new scholarship program on homeless students from Delaware public schools.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that the program will provide $1,000 each academic year to supplement students' financial aid.

The university will work with school districts to help identify students eligible for the program set to begin this fall. They must qualify academically and maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

The program was the idea of Trudy Hite, a senior director of student financial services, who was inspired by an article about homeless students.

In addition to the scholarship program, university officials say they will help students find suitable living arrangements and the financial aid and career services offices will work with students to ease the burden of paying for college.
