Issues Divide Salisbury Mayor and Council

biiopic

With this month’s election the newest member of the Salisbury City Council Jake Day and his ascension to the council presidency was hailed as a new day for the town and Mayor Jim Ireton.

Indeed, the council gave its okay this week to making Acting Fire Chief Richard Hoppes permanent with the backing of the Mayor.

The new Fire Chief’s promotion was rejected by the previous council majority.

But, Council Vice President Laura Mitchell told the Salisbury Daily Times, that she did not think it meant “smooth sailing.”

She points to the Mayor’s three strikes legislation that would subject landlords to financial burdens for more than three police calls to their properties.

Mitchell said it unfairly singles out rentals.

Meanwhile, Council member Shanie Shields said she wouldn’t support setting aside $85-thousand for a downtown redevelopment office unless there is a 2 percent pay raise for most city employees.

The paper reports that when offered an opportunity to comment on the story he told them, “Nope, I’m good.”

Shield did add that when she and the Mayor disagree they do it with a smile.
