Christina School Board Drops Teacher Incentive Plan

official photo

The Christina School Board has decided to scrap it plans for a teacher incentive program leaving behind $2.3 million in federal Race to the Top funds.

The decision was made last night upon the recommendation of Superintendent Freeman Williams

The only board member dissenting was George Evans while Gina Backus abstained.

Williams said an impasse had been reached in the district’s discussions with the state over rules for the program that would have provided bonuses to high-performing teachers at low performing schools.

The state wanted to give $20-thousand to a small group of teachers…who were rated highly effective while the district wanted to give $1-thousand to those rated effective-- a rating that most teachers earn.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that district officials had argued that the state’s evaluation system was unproven and could cost the district in the long run.
