Tensions Erupt at Somerset County School Board Meeting

somerset.k12.md.us

It was rowdy this week at the Somerset County School Board meeting.

Supporters of Washington High School Principal William Johnson packed the Westover boardroom Wednesday.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that they called for the resignation of school board members Dan Kuebler and Robert Wells who have criticized student behavior at Washington High.

A trash fire in a boy’s bathroom sparked sharp criticism of Johnson leading one parent Bonnie Wells, the spouse of board member Well, to call for Johnson’s resignation.

The paper reports that there were racial overtones to the audience response.

The county schools have seen a transition as the first black superintendent and several other African-American education leaders were hired.

And only two years into her job Marjorie Miles announced last month that she was stepping down.

Somerset County NAACP leader Kirkland Hall told the audience that he believed that the civil rights era fights are still going on.
