Charles Robert Smith III

One of the suspects arrested in the Virginia Eastern Shore arson fires has reportedly confessed.

TheSalisbury Daily Times reports that a checklist for bail determination says  Charles Robert Smith III confessed and has 31 previous felony convictions.

The paper says it is not clear from the document what the scope of the confession was.

He was arrested along with Tonya Susan Bundick, both of Hopeton, who police believe are behind the string of arsons that reached nearly 80 since mid-November in Accomack County.

When 40 year old Bundick appeared in court for arraignment yesterday she had no comment for reporters who swarmed around her as she walked from the jail to the General District Court.

The two have been charged with one count of arson and one count of conspiracy to commit arson…in connection with the most recent arson fire in Melfa.

Police say more charges are likely to come.
