Del. Rep. John Carney Backs Gay Marriage

WASHINGTON (AP) - Delaware's lone congressman has announced his support for same-sex marriage.

Democrat John Carney announced his support for marriage equality Monday on his website. He said as a Catholic, he has tried to reach a balance between honoring the religious sacrament of marriage and letting same-sex couples to enjoy legal recognition.

Carney said he does not believe that it is right for the government to treat couples differently because of sexual orientation.

Same-sex civil unions are legal in Delaware. State lawmakers have not yet introduced a bill authorizing same-sex marriage, but plan to do so this year.
