Building Begins for Calpine Gas Powered Plant in Delaware

calpine.com

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Construction is getting underway on a new gas-fired power plant in Delaware.

The 309-megawatt plant is being built at the Garrison industrial tract in Dover, where operators of a solar power plant sued to block the plant. The suit was settled in January.

Construction officials say about 100 workers are to be employed by the end of the year, rising to 250 next spring when heavy equipment is installed.

The News-Journal reports that energy firm Calpine received $2.5 million in state funds to extend a gas line six miles. Dover also provided $2 million in water and sewer funds and $4 million in bond proceeds for infrastructure.

The city is expected to receive $2 million per year from Calpine in water payments and taxes once the plant is running.
