Gun Rights Rally
Representative Andy Harris joined Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis yesterday to oppose any legislation that would restrict gun rights under the Second Amendment during a town hall meeting at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center of more than 300 people.
On the issue of background checks the Eastern Shore Republican congressman noted that many states do not prosecute people for lying on their paperwork when applying for a firearm.
Also on hand were Wicomico County State’s Attorney Matt Maciarella and other county sheriffs as well as Worcester Republican Delegate Mike McDermott.
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is moving legislation through Annapolis that ranges from a ban certain assault-style weapons and changing who can buy guns in the state to requiring certain training to purchase a handgun and changing the reporting requirements for gun deals.
The measure has been approved by the state Senate and is now expected to get a vote in the House of Delegates.
Annapolis has drawn supporters and opponents of gun safety laws to committee hearings.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Some Maryland moms want the lawmakers to pass comprehensive gun control legislation.
Members of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America are holding a rally Tuesday in Annapolis to advocate on behalf of a measure that would ban assault weapons, limit magazine rounds and create a new licensing requirement for handguns buyers.
The state Senate passed the gun control legislation last month. The measure now awaits consideration by the House of Delegates.
Organizers say the mothers will also bring their children to participate in the rally, which begins at 8:30 a.m.
