Feds Ask for Millions From Sandy Relief Fund for Delaware Coast

facebook.com

With the high tides of last week hitting Delaware coastal residents state officials say that millions of cubic yards of sand could be required to fill in dune breaches and ease marsh flooding around Prime Hook.

Federal officials have requested $20 million from the Obama administration’s Sandy relief bill.

State surveys are already underway.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that preliminary and official federal records found that last week’s highest tide mark at Lewes nearly reached the 1983 level.

It ranked in the top 75 levels since record keeping began in 1957.

Fenwick Island Mayor Audrey Serio told the News Journal that residents largely escaped the kind of first-floor damage that was seen during Hurricane Sandy last October.
