American Legion Seeks Okay for Slots

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Military veterans and other members of private non-profit clubs in Delaware are protesting an apparent crackdown on slot machines and video poker terminals.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that several hundred people lobbied lawmakers Thursday to legalize the gambling machines operated on their premises.

The groups use slot machines to raise money, but state law enforcement says they're illegal.

Jeff Crouser is adjutant of the American Legion Walter L. Fox. Post 2 in Dover. He leads a group of a half-dozen nonprofit clubs that he says collectively raise and spend $5.5 million on charitable causes annually. He says much of that money comes from gambling machines.

House Speaker says lawmakers are gathering information but there's no draft legislation yet to address their concerns.
