WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington's incoming mayor has chosen a city police captain to be Wilmington's new police chief.

Mayor-elect Dennis Williams on Thursday appointed Capt. Christine Dunning to lead the force as Wilmington's first female police chief.

Williams had said during his campaign for mayor that he would choose someone from outside the police department to replace current chief Michael Szczerba (SUR-buh).

Dunning joined the Wilmington police department in 1990.
