That’s what Bruce Mears is being told after his company got cited for working on a $400-thosuand house in Bethany Beach on Black Friday.
He knew that the town did not allow construction on Thanksgiving but was surprised when police showed up to cite him with a $150 fine.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that initially Town Manager Clifford Graviet defended the six citations issued that day that forbids heavy construction on weekends and holidays to preserve peace and quiet in the community.
Mears put his story on his Facebook page on Monday and became the talk of radio station 105.9 FM’s morning call-in show.
Yesterday Sussex County Council member Sam Wilson used the incident to argue against an unrelated change in the septic-system rules.
By late Tuesday the News Journal reports that Graviet backed away from his defense of the citations.
Apparently, police had mistakenly used the holidays for town employees not the code enforcement department’s list of no-work days.
