MD Struggles With Real ID Law

traveling-by-car, publicdomainepictures.net

States like Maryland are struggling with how to comply with the nation’s Real ID system in producing secure driver’s license.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Maryland officials are being forced to make a choice.

There is a high-cost material that would require the state to move back to black-and-white photos or a cheaper material that better matches these tight fiscal times.

The paper says that both are considered secure but the high-cost option is the preferred.

And the bidding process has also been complicated for making the license in the state after the Maryland State board of Contract Appeal upheld a complaint that led to a re-evaluation of the process.

The deadline for compliance with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Real ID system has been extended a second time, until Jan. 15, and may be extended again.
