Soldier Facing Murder Charges, "I was addicted to killing."

"Addicted to Killing."

That was found in a letter from Dwight Smith to his father after the soldier was charged with kidnapping, raping and murdering a Wilmington woman last year.

The undated letter was published by the New York

Times columnist Nicholas Kristof in conjunction with a column on Sunday that argued for doing a better job of caring for soldiers after they come home from war.

In the letter, Smith writes that he killed men, women and children -- many without cause.

"Some begging for mercy. I have a problem. I think I am addicted to killing people."

The 25-year old soldier has been accused of kidnapping, raping and murdering 65-year old Marsha Lee.

He could be sentenced to death.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Smith served in Iraq from 2007 to 200 8 and in Afghanistan from May 2010 to April 2011, when he was injured in a mortar attack.
