DOVER, Del. (AP) — Natural resources officials are urging drivers to stay alert for deer crossing the roads.
With daylight savings time ending Sunday, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control says more workers will be driving home from work at dusk, when deer are beginning their busiest time.
Officials say the average white-tailed deer in Delaware weighs about 130 pounds; larger bucks can weigh 180 pounds or more. Hitting an animal that size can do major damage to vehicles and can cause injuries to those in the car.
Last year, Delaware police departments reported 1,011 deer-vehicle crashes, including one in which a person was killed.
