DOVER, Del. (AP) - Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Carper angrily defended his military record at a campaign forum for U.S. House and Senate candidates in Delaware.
Carper has been the subject of personal attacks from Independent challenger Alex Pires, who has accused Carper, among other things, of falsely implying that he served in Vietnam.
When Pires brought up the subject again at Wednesday's League of Women Voters forum, Carper responded angrily, saying Vietnam veterans like himself deserve respect. Carper is a former Navy aviator who flew anti-submarine patrols in Southeast Asia during the war.
Aside from the back-and-forth between Carper and Pires, much of the forum centered on the candidates' views on the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, and whether they would vote to repeal all or part of it.
